An EDM is an electronic device that is easily used to measure distance.
To measure distances between two points, the instrument is set up at one point and a pole with a prism is placed vertically at the other point. The EDM device transmits an infrared beam that is reflected back into the unit by a reflecting prism used as a target at another point. Using the time required for the ray to return, the distance traveled by the ray is calculated and displayed by the EDM.

The most advanced form of EDM is the laser meter which can be used to measure distances up to 30 meters without a target and up to 100 meters using a target. Hence no assistant is needed even for short distance measurements. If you measure length, width, and height together using this tool, it can be used to automatically calculate area and volume.
