Based on the arrangement of the stones in the construction and the degree of refinement in the surface finish, stone masonry can be broadly divided into the following two types:

    2. Uncoursed rubble
    3. Random rubble
    4. Dry rubble
    5. Polygonal rubble
    6. Flint rubble

    1. Ashlar fine
    2. Ashlar rough tooled
    3. Ashlar rock or quarry faced
    4. Ashlar chamfered
    5. Ashlar block-in course
