Plaster may be applied in one or more coats, but the thickness of one coat shall not exceed 12 mm. In the case of inferior or cheaper types of construction, plaster may usually be a single coat. For general construction, plaster is usually applied in two coats, while for high-end work it is applied in three coats. The final setting coat should not be applied until the previous coat is almost dry. The previous surface should be scraped or roughened before the next coat of plaster is applied. In plastering, the plaster mix is applied either by throwing it against the walls with great force or by pressing it into the surface.
