Introduction to lime

Lime is one of the most important and widely used construction materials. In fact, it used to be the primary cement material before the advent of Portland cement. The Egyptians and Romans made considerable use of this material for various construction purposes. Even in India various engineering structures like big palaces, bridges, temples, forts and monuments were constructed with lime as cementing material and some of these structures are still in good condition. This is due to some unique properties of lime, such as its good workability, early hardening, good strength and moisture resistance and excellent adhesion to masonry units. Although it has been replaced by cement in India and elsewhere, this material still stands up to cement in most important properties.
