When water is mixed with cement, the cement components chemically react with the water to form a complex chemical mixture. Mixing cement with water makes the cement paste sticky and gradually thickens over time. It has been found that ordinary cement attains 70 percent of its ultimate strength in 20 days and 90 percent in a year or more.
