What Is AutoCAD DXF (File Extention Is .DXF)

AutoCAD DXF is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk to enable data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. DXF was originally introduced as part of AutoCAD 1.0 in December 1982, and was intended to provide an accurate representation of data in the AutoCAD native file format DWG, for which Autodesk had not published specifications for several years. This makes importing DXF files difficult. AutoCAD versions Release 10 and above support both ASCII and binary formats of DXF. Earlier versions only supported ASCII. As AutoCAD has become more powerful, supporting more complex object types, DXF has become less useful. Many CAD applications use the DWG format, which can be licensed from Autodesk or non-natively from the Open Design Alliance.
