It is made up of three pieces. The top piece is 1.25 m long solid, while the 1.25 m long central piece and 1.5 m long bottom piece are hollow. The top part slides into the central part through the telescope. The staff has a total length of 4 meters when fully extended. The upper two pieces are held in place by brass spring catches. The smallest division of this type of leveling staff is also 5 mm. The meter numbers, shown on the left, are marked in red. Decimeter numbers 1-9 are shown on the right and marked in black. The decimeter

number 10 of each meter length is omitted and the letter M is marked to indicate the end of the meter length. The graduation is marked straight and appears upside down when viewed through binoculars. By using a telescoping staff it can be ensured that all three sections are fully extended when using the full length, i.e. 4 m.
