Although tile roofs are popular in many areas, high cost, thermal discomfort and the unavailability of well-weathered palmyra or other wooden rafters are major disadvantages.
Asbestos roofing replaced tiled roofing to a certain extent, but is not popular due to health risks, cost, and thermal discomfort. Madras Terrace is now obsolete due to non-availability of skilled labor and heavy dead weight.
Reinforced concrete (RC) slab is a very good alternative to flat roof in such situations.
