Surface Preparation

Before applying whitewash to a new wall surface, it is important that the surface is cleaned, brushed and free of loose material and any other foreign matter. If the coating surface is too smooth, the coats will not adhere to it. In such cases, the surface should be sanded to ensure proper adhesion of the whitewash.

In the case of re-whitewashing, all loose material and scales should be removed. Old loose whitewash is removed by rubbing with sandpaper. All wall holes, surface irregularities and minor repairs are pre-corrected by filling with lime plaster.

All greasy spots should be given a coat of rice water and sand mixture so that the finishing wash adheres to the surface. If the old whitewash has become discolored due to smoke or other causes like in kitchens, factories, restaurants, etc., in such cases the surfaces should be washed with a mixture of wood ash and waste or yellow clay before applying the whitewash. Washing Cement plastered walls should be washed with a weak soapy solution and dried before white washing.
