Single joist floor

This type of floor is used for residential buildings where the spans are relatively short and the loads are light. Wooden joists are spaced about 30 cm apart, spanning the rooms in the short direction. Wooden planks are laid on these joists. Wooden joists are supported on the wall boards. Corbels may need to support joists if the wall is not wide enough. The joists should be strong enough to withstand the load and at the same time should not deflect too much. If the length of the joist is more than 3.5 m, struts are provided in the joist to check the side buckling. The wooden planks are about 4 cm thick and 10-15 cm wide.
