Ground timber or basement floor

Wooden floors are made on ground floors, usually in theatres. A number of sleeper walls or bony walls of half brick thickness or full brick thickness are constructed at 1.5 meter intervals to support the wooden floor. Wall plates are placed on the walls and sleeper walls to support the joists that support the floor. The joists are provided about 30 cm apart and wooden planks are placed closely above the joists to provide a floor. Adequate air circulation is provided in the floor, otherwise the wood will attack dry rot. The following precautions are recommended:

  1. Well-seasoned timber should be used in the construction of such floors.
  2. Plain cement concrete 1:2:4 of 10 cm thickness is to be provided over the soil beneath the timber floor.
  3. The empty space between the floor and the concrete base should be filled up with sand.
