Floors are provided to divide a building into different levels to create more accommodation on top of each other within a certain limited space. The lower floor near the ground is known as ground floor and the other floors above it are called upper floors like first and second floor. If a dwelling is constructed below the natural ground level, it is known as basement and the floor provided therein is known as basement floor.
A floor may consist of two main components:
- A sub-floor that provides proper support to the floor covering and the superimposed loads carried on it.
- A floor covering which provides a smooth, clean, impervious and durable surface.
