When choosing the product that you, as a new affiliate marketer, are going to promote, experts recommend either following your passion or opting for profit potential. We recommend merging them together and using both techniques. You can recognize your emotions but also be aware of market realities.
Say you are fond of collecting earwax and you can write academic articles on earwax. The question is how large a community of other earwax collectors there is and whether there are any products that can be profitably promoted. We suspect the profit potential will be close to zero.
But should you ignore the things that interest you and focus only on profits? It certainly looks easy and inviting. If you were trying to promote Amazon products, for example, you could simply go to Amazon and select products that are among the top sellers. Since the site also has feedback ratings, you can narrow down your product selection to products that have received four or five stars. How simple is it? A few minutes on Amazon and you have a top product listing with enthusiastic buyers who are positive about the product.
So how do you combine your passion with a realistic prospect of profitable affiliate marketing? If you’re lucky enough to know what you’re passionate about, start your potential product list with that. Next list the areas in which you have expertise. Next, add the products you know about to the list. Rank the items on your lists according to how well you know each topic.
We think that setting the bar to only what you’re passionate about might be setting it a little too high and might turn off many new affiliate marketers. We think a lot of people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond are still looking for something they’re passionate about. But if you know what you’re passionate about, great! Your passion and enthusiasm will shine through and be evident to your audience.
