Understanding the risks of being banned

You can get banned from both individual affiliate programs and affiliate networks, and the impact on your earnings can be devastating. Sometimes the penalty is that they stop paying you. Sometimes you get banned completely and your account is closed.

A ban can result from both a sin of omission and a sin of commission. Either you did something they didn’t allow or you didn’t do something they required. The requirements are described in their TOS (Terms of Service). Maybe you didn’t include the disclosures they need, or you used a promotion method they don’t approve of. You may have sent an email blast that was considered spam. There are many possible reasons. It is therefore important for you to read the TOS carefully and comply with all requirements of the affiliate program or network.

Requirements and TOS may change frequently. I (author Ted) know that I have sometimes paid less attention than I should have to an email sent by an affiliate program (if they send one at all) saying that they have updated their terms of service. . It is important that you address these TOS changes in your affiliate program or contract with the network and update your website or promotion to comply with the new requirements.
