There are many different ways to make money on the Internet, and it seems like new ways to make money are being developed every day. For example, there are people who develop Internet marketing programs and strategies for large and small companies. Computer coders develop software and plugins used by affiliate marketers. Freelancers who specialize in writing, web design, graphics, etc. offer their services for hire on sites like Freelancer, Fiverr, and Upwork. There are nearby ways to make money like digital marketing, which is developing online marketing campaigns and strategies for companies. Even in this book we describe different variations of affiliate marketing.
One of the main ways affiliate marketing differs from other forms of making money on the Internet is that, with few exceptions, the affiliate marketer does not produce, build, pack, or ship the product. He only acts as a “referrer”, exposing the buyer to a new product or service. When a sale is made, the affiliate marketer makes a commission.
One criticism of offering physical products is that commissions are lower than other forms of affiliate marketing. Another flavor of affiliate marketing that we discuss in this book is digital products. Often these are either tools or courses for other affiliate marketers to use to grow their business. The advantage of this flavor of marketing is that the commissions are usually very high. They can range from 25 percent to 75 percent of the sales price. The downside to this flavor of marketing is that it attracts other affiliate marketers who may have more experience and more expertise than you, so the competition is tough.
The next flavor of affiliate marketing is discussed in Part 4, where you develop a service and offer it to other affiliates to promote and market. In a sense you become a “company” offering an affiliate marketing program. You are recruiting other affiliates to promote your product, thereby multiplying your promotional efforts by the number of affiliates who join your affiliate program. You can also offer your products to affiliate marketers through affiliate networks. If you have a great product, promote it well, and attract a large number of affiliates who promote your product well to others, you can make a lot of money. But first, you have to create a great product that other affiliate marketers will buy. Secondly, you should already master all the steps of affiliate marketing and have your own affiliate marketing setup.
If your future goal is to develop, introduce, and market your own products, that’s great. But take it a step further after mastering the steps necessary in the simple “taste” of affiliate marketing described in the earlier sections of this book. This will set you up with a solid foundation as you plan more ambitious (and potentially more profitable) affiliate marketing pursuits.
One thing you’ll notice during your research is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of “review sites” that list the top ten affiliate networks, themes, or whatever you’re looking for. They claim It’s important to understand that most of these sites are affiliate marketing sites that earn a commission for clicking on one of the links you recommend. New affiliate networks, smaller affiliate networks, or people with some issues may need more to advertise their products and be willing to pay higher commissions. We’re not saying that any particular list is skewed in favor of higher-paying picks, but it’s a distinct possibility. Here’s an internet safety tip that can help you in many of your searches. Have you ever searched for a stereo receiver or other consumer good and found the largest and most well-known manufacturers missing from one source’s top ten list? But somehow a stereo receiver from a company you’ve never heard of is at the top of the list. Just consider the possibility that financial incentives may have skewed the results, and be cautious.
