In all beds, joints and face stones should be well prepared so that they conform to the desired pattern. Stones placed in regular courses should not be less than 300mm in height. The width of the stones should not be less than the height of the course. Also, the length of the stones should be twice the height of the course. Typically, face stones are placed alternately as headers and stretchers. The header falls below the middle of the stretchers. To break continuous vertical joints, stones in adjacent layers should have laps of more than half the height of the course. All joints, horizontal or vertical, shall be made of fine mortar with a maximum thickness of 3 mm. The broken edges of the stones should not be visible at the joints.
