The main purpose of proportioning is to fix such proportion of raw materials which will result in mortar of desired quality, i.e. required strength, durability and finish. Since mortars used in different construction situations are not subjected to the same forces and conditions, no single rule for mortar proportions can be formulated. The widely recommended and commonly adopted ratios for various situations are summarized.
