A varnish may be defined as a homogeneous liquid consisting primarily of a resinous substance dissolved in a suitable oil or volatile liquid. The objectives of Varnishing are as follows:

1. It brightens the appearance of wooden surfaces.
2. It protects painted surfaces from atmospheric reactions.
