
The term porcelain is used to denote fine earthenware that is white, thin and transparent. Clay of sufficient purity and high degree of hardness and plasticity is used for the manufacture of porcelain. It is hard, brittle and non-porous. It is produced from clay, feldspar, quartz and minerals. There are two types of porcelain – low voltage porcelain and high voltage porcelain. Low voltage porcelain is produced by dry process and high voltage porcelain is produced by wet process.
The purposes for which glazing is done are:
to improve appearance.
To create decorative effects.
To provide smooth surfacing.
To protect the surface from the action of environmental agencies.
To make particles durable.
